Strict Constructionist
Jefferson was a strict constructionist, meaning he followed the Constitution word by word.
The Constitution caused Jefferson problems deciding what to do.
- In the Constitution, it does not mention acquiring foreign territories. Furthermore, it does not mention turning the territory into states.
- Jefferson did not want to take a loose constructionist's view on Louisiana because he thought that bending the Constitution is like having no Constitution at all.
